Linden Drive Between East Okoboji Lake And Upper Gar Lake

This unique project replaced the steel I-beam causeway bridge with a 150’ x 32’ continuous concrete slab (CCS) bridge. The project design addressed several challenges including increased clearance for boat traffic, poor lake bed soils, an overhead electric transmission line which could not be relocated, and a construction window which could not interfere with the tourist season so important to the economic vitality of the Lake’s area. In addition to the 5’ wide sidewalks located on each side, the City also wanted to include aesthetic barrier rail, hand railing, and lighting which were consistent with those incorporated along the reconstructed U.S. Highway 71 through town. The project also included approximately 650’ of approach P.C.C. pavement, sidewalks, and driveway reconstruction.

Both the engineering and construction were funded by the Federal Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Program administered by the Iowa DOT. This project was given the Iowa Quality Initiative Structures Award and recognized as the “best cast-in-place Concrete Slab Bridge on the Local Road System constructed in the State of Iowa in 2004 – 2006” as judged by the Associated General Contractors of Iowa, the Iowa DOT, and the Federal Highway Administration. Full-service resident engineering and observation services were provided during construction. Construction of the project was completed in 2006.
